Every collector of Rauris minerals has the same problem: It's almost impossible to get a good smoky quartz from this region. Especially one that shows such dark brown color as this very specimen we have here! The single dominant smoky quartz is very well developed and clear at the insice - with imperfections and inclusions, but which is acceptable on a rare specimen like this. The surface shows especially nice luster at the front with striations and sharp edges. The termination is flawless and sharp! On the backside there are several intergrown sidy-crystals which show contacts yet fortunately the main view is in very best shape! An outstanding and exceedingly rare specimen from the Rauris valley!

This is a remarkably beautiful quartz specimen from Val Gronda da Cavrein that shows best textbook aesthetics! One large main quartz surrounded by several side-crystals is perched on a well proportioned piece of rock matrix. The quartz is glassy and lustrous with only very few internal clouds. The chisel-tip termination is exceptionally sharp and completely flawless! Most unusual about this specimen however is the greenish layer that coveres the matrix. The surface is completely covered in transparent quartz which again grew over an association of chlorite and epidote, which is rare for the Swiss Alps and only characteristic for this valley! Very unusual and appealing in person!

Color and clarity of this rather small specimen are very much impressive! The single crystal shows a deep cherry red and is gemmy through and through! With a pointed pyramidal termination the development is remarkably good for a piece of that size. Overall the crystal shows some rough edges and faces but thats contact induced, not due to damage, which becomes obvious when you put it under the microscope. Our video shows color and luster very nicely. Clarity on the other had is much better in person!

The front view is dominated by marvelous glassy calcite aggregates with great luster and clarity! The calcite is surrounded by sharply defined adularia rhombs, contrasted by some chlorite. The backside is a 3-dimensional landscape of adularia and chlorite. The overall condition of this imposing specimen is surprisingly fine with only some minor contacts here and there - mostly on the back - but no damage! Hard to imagine how a large specimen like this could survive the retrieving process in such unharmed condition! A unique specimen of great size and beauty!
